The Winter Olympics is a worldwide event held every four years that brings together the best athletes to compete on ice and snow. Fans across the world tune in, creating energy and excitement that goes far beyond just the medals. The Games unite different countries and cultures through the determination and teamwork of each and every athlete.
One reason fans get excited about the Olympics is because they play the sports shown on TV. Emily Schilling, a sophomore, is a skier and shared that the most exciting moment this year was “USA podium top three for girls’ freestyle,” showing the pride many fans feel watching Team USA succeed. She also explained that the Olympics bring people together because of “patriotism, everybody come together,” especially during big rivalries like the United States versus Canada in hockey. Math Teacher Drew Fuller participates in curling. For him, that event stands out the most. One of the most memorable events for Fuller was when “the U.S. came from behind in mixed doubles curling,” a comeback that captured the unpredictability of Olympic events.
One reason the Olympics feel so meaningful is their rarity. As Kyle Neibauer, a social studies teacher shared, his favorite part is “that it’s once every four years,” which makes it feel more special than annual sporting events. He also enjoys watching sports he normally wouldn’t pay attention to, especially downhill skiing. For many viewers, the Olympics offer a chance to discover new events and athletes worldwide.
This year’s competition was filled with dramatic moments. Neibauer pointed to “the U.S. men [hockey team] winning gold on the last day,” as a major highlight, providing an exciting end to the Olympics. Fuller also noted how the Games showcase true global competition. He explained that “the U.S. isn’t always a powerhouse,” which allows other countries to shine. Norway, for example, finished with the most medals, demonstrating the depth of international talent.
Hosted in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, the Games celebrated more than athletic achievement. Even after the 2026 Winter Olympics come to an end, the memories of victory, perseverance, and unity continue to inspire fans to get excited every four years for this special event.
