Student sections are a very big part of games. It doesn't just keep the people interested and engaged with the game, but it makes it fun to be there. It only takes a few people to help hype everyone up and get our student section engaged. I don't mean that you have to be jumping around and yelling but joining in on the chants and just cheering on our teams is what we need. I have talked to some athletes and they all have agreed that the better the student section the more confident they feel.
Chase Vermillion, a varsity girls soccer player states that even at away games when the opposing teams student section is cheering it helps motivate them even though it's not for them. Vermillion says “ it gets very frustrating for the team knowing how much support our students give the basketball teams, why can't soccer girls get that?” For the first time in Park High history our girls soccer team has made and won divisionals and will be going to state. They have had a very successful session, but have gotten nearly zero support from our students at the games. Why wouldn’t we want to support one of our best teams in our school, as they are making history?
Volleyball games are the best games to watch because of how engaging the student section can be. I can promise you that no one will say you're weird or it's embarrassing to support your school. You look so much more lame not doing anything; why would you just stand in the student section not matching the theme or not cheering to make the game fun.
One of the most fun things about games is dressing up for them. As a whole school we need to get more people not to just come to the game but do follow the themes too. Our students need to find a better way on how to get the word out about what the theme will be for that night, such as saying it over announcements or putting up more signs. My call for action is to talk about the games and get them hyped up. The past years our students were so involved with our school sports. It doesn't matter if we win or not but if we can get more people to come and support for fun. Students have various excuses for why they don't show up. Stetson Bailey’s reason for not coming and supporting his school is “ I have to work on my truck.” Not one student that I had talked to didn’t give me a real reasonable reason for why they don’t show up for games.
