Was the “Outer Banks” hype worth it?

Outer Banks is an American teen Netflix series that premiered in 2020, following a group of teenagers called the “Pogues” who live in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The thrilling and adventurous series showcases a group of teenagers in search of treasure and all the obstacles they faced along the way. Season three was released this spring, and although it is still filled with adventure, I found it quite redundant and very predictable to watch, leaving me disappointed because I expected a lot more.

The young cast consisting of Chase Stokes, Madison Bailey, Madeline Cline, Jonathan Davis, and

Rudy Pankow, captivated audiences in its previous seasons which led the show to being #1 on Netflix

within hours of its release of season three. According to Variety.com, season three of Outer Banks dominated the top 10 chart with over 155 million hours watched. To me it makes a lot of sense. I was up waiting for the release and because Netflix is the only platform the show can be watched on, it didn’t come as a surprise when the site kept crashing due to a multitude of fans logging on and watching the show.

Before its release, I saw multiple teen news outlets posting fan fiction theories, some of which came true when the main characters JJ and Kiara finally became a romantic couple; however, the way the storyline fell just seemed expected. That seemed to be the entire theme of the show to me. Everything was following the basic teen movie romantics with the drama and not so much the thrilling and adventurous show I was used to. Don’t get me wrong, there are still the aspects I enjoyed and still new obstacles involving Sarah Cameron’s dad that gave the season some flare along with the new character Carlos, but I must comment on the lack of personal character development. They all seem to be staying stagnant.

I must say I have mixed emotions about what will come with a fourth season, and how the show will continue its exotic storyline. I am, however, interested in what will happen to the Pogue’s in South America as they seem to be on the brink of obtaining the treasure.
