Danforth is giving students the incredible chance to speak their truth, bridging the gap between generations and showing just how real life can be for today’s teens. The show features artwork created by students in the Park High printmaking class who responded to a challenging prompt focused on themes like security, vulnerability, and personal growth. The prompt given to students pushed them to reflect deeply on their own lives and the world around them.
The prompt asked, What does it mean to feel secure? And what happens when that security is missing? From papier-mâché and leather to acrylic paint and fabric, students used all kinds of materials to express themselves. Some pieces explore the idea of a “front” that teens often put up to hide what they’re feeling. Others focus on the pressure to meet expectations or the challenge of trying to feel safe in a world that doesn’t always make sense.
“Some students wanted to show the strength it takes to face things people don’t always see,” said Mussetter. “It’s like when people see a finished piece of art, but they don’t see all the effort and emotion that went into making it.”
“That message is at the core of the show; what’s seen on the outside doesn’t often tell the full story. Like printmaking, where the final product hides the detailed process behind it,” said Storrs Bishop the Danforth curator. This art exhibit reveals the emotions and experiences behind each piece. This was more than just an art show, this exhibit is a powerful reminder that students have important stories to tell.
The exhibit was made possible thanks to who helped provide the space, as well as support from local businesses that contributed supplies for the class. The Park High Art classes also hope to partner with the museum in future years to bring even more exhibition opportunities to students, such as painting and drawing classes. Even with generous grant funding, the event hasn’t quite hit its financial goal, but there’s hope for the future. A donation box at Danforth will help fund upcoming shows and shows that will involve future Park High art classes, and ensure this incredible platform for student voices and passions continues.
