Social Media is often seen as the root of all modern problems. It started out as a simple way to communicate and connect with people, but it has become such a part of our culture now that it is used for all sorts of things, even building a career. In just the past ten years, social media apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat have developed so much that they have changed the way we live.
I used to be really addicted to my phone to the point I was staying up late on my phone and had about eight-nine hours a day of screentime. It basically took over my brain and caused a short attention span that was really hard to break from.
Instead of doing homework I would just be on my phone. Instead of hanging out with my family or friends I would hide away in my room and brain rot on my phone.
I believe a lot of people can probably agree and go through the same problems. It’s something you get addicted to without even realizing.
This technology used to be for positive things like learning and connecting with others. But just in the last couple years it has caused a lot of conflict.
In my personal experience I have seen a lot of bullying. It seems like it’s easier to say whatever you want over the screen, so people are more prone to do so because they know they won’t get into much trouble unless they’re caught.
There’s a lot of misinformation that is plastered on social media with really important topics like political things such as the president. They say lies or preach information they have heard without making sure the information is true or doing their own research.
It then gets to people, especially young people, who will believe it and then spread that misinformation, causing chaos because they believed what they saw or “read”.
Then there are things like scamming which is a huge problem. Scammers catch the vulnerable people who are just happy they are getting attention and are not self aware of what is happening. It happens a lot with old people and really young people.
And there is the biggest issue: privacy. That’s something that is a worldwide problem. You click on the wrong site and information is stolen with a snap of a finger.
The way the internet works now, almost anyone’s info is public to the world, making it very easy to find things. But, people also post way too much information which is a safety concern for anyone.
Sometimes I can picture exactly what it would be like to not have social media. I would be more willing to do different things or activities without worrying about who’s texting me on snapchat or what my friends are doing on the weekends.
I won’t be so locked up and reserved because I would rather be left alone in my own world watching tik-toks or something like that. I wish I had never downloaded social media and if I could go back in time and change that I would.
