Twelve new members were inducted into the Park High National Honor Society chapter Oct. 23, joining the current membership of 17 upperclassmen. After a welcome from faculty advisor Dr. Laurie Nelson Knuchel, chapter president Molly Arterburn and vice president Landess O’Dea introduced guest speaker Dr. Yvonne Brutger.
Brutger talked about the importance of service, drawing on her experience working as an emergency room doctor and then co-founding the Community School Collaborative (CSC) as a way of giving back to Livingston’s youth. CSC allows students from Sleeping Giant Middle School to engage in “career exploration and work-based learning experiences” according to its official website. NHS students serve as mentors and chaperones during the CSC Cougar Days at SGMS.
Officers Mackenna O’Dea, Sophie Sestrich, Logan Hawthorne and Carson Bekedam explained the four NHS principles of scholarship, leadership, character and service, each lighting a candle to signify this attribute.
New members were inducted into the society by signing their names in the book of membership and reciting the NHS pledge. A reception for members and their families followed.
Members inducted into the Park High National Honor Society chapter were: Ripley Cunningham, Jocelyn Gomez, Gray Hoglund-Mossman, Grace Jones, Rose Jones, Anna Lende, Jorja McCormick, Gibson Reagor, Palen Sexton, Siobhan Stevenson, Chase Vermillion and Isla Vermillion.
