At Park High school, the choir is strong and talented. Many of the students are taught by the current choir teacher, Hannah Petry and her accompanist, Clayton Oberquell. Petry says she “enjoys working with Mr. O. We’re very comfortable with each other.” Petry, in her first year as a choir teacher, said that Oberquell she also said that “he taught me as a voice student in high school. We have given each other many ideas.”
Oberquell said he takes pride in his role as an accompanist and loves working with choir teacher, Petry.
Oberquell said “I missed being with the kids at school during covid and am glad to be working with them and Ms. Petry again.” Oberquell loves our school environment and also thinks it’s fun. He’s been a choir teacher for many years and has been at Park High for 16 years, since 2006. During covid, Oberquell had to leave Park High, since the choir wasn’t allowed to sing at this time. Oberquell said “I missed being with the kids at school during covid and am glad to be working with them and Ms. Petry again.” While not working at PHS, heand started Beartooth Gems, a gemstone cutting business to occupy himself, his business name is Beartooth Gems.
Five years after starting the business, ObserquellHe started it about 5 years ago and is still running it. He likes to cut Montana sapphires and many other stones, such as amethyst and quartz. Soon enough, Park High needed a choir teacher during 2022, so he decided to take the position. He took a year off from being a teacher in 2023.
Oberquell is a very interesting person when getting to know him, he took voice and piano lessons in high school, then continued during college. Oberquell really enjoys playing piano and says he “likes to be able to shut out the outside world and just play”. Petry, on the other hand, enjoys having him as a piano teacher to accompany her. She says “it’s easier with him to play the piano, I tend to struggle playing all the parts while singing.” Petry states that “it’s easier to direct students in choir and give them suggestions.”
Petry and Oberquell seem to be a good teacher, accompanist duo and work together very well. Petry started as the choir teacher at Sleeping Giant Middle School this year, as well as at Park High and Oberquell goes between Park High and SGMS, teaching many students throughout Llivingston. Many may not know them considering a handful of students at Park High don’t or haven’t done choir, but Oberquell and Petry are still important role models in Park High School and hopefully will continue to be over the years, for many students to come.
