The Steel Horse Rodeo was an event that happens on Labor Day weekend at the fairgrounds here in Livingston. It is a non-profit event where 85% of the workers are volunteers Most of the events are motorcycle racing about skill not speed except for the unique weenie ride in which the contestant tries to eat a hot dog covered in mustard, tied up on a string while riding on a motorcycle. It’s usually the last event that happens.
The most prominent funding for the rodeo is the T-shirt stand which sells t-shirts with a unique logo for every year. They also sell a couple other small things with the logo on it and they will press one of your t-shirts if you bring one, usually for around $20 per shirt. They will also have a 50/50 raffle with 50% of the money made going to the winner and 50% goes to the rodeo. The winner donated to another rider who was injured.
Milee Morrison, “the superintendent of the swag booth,” said that the Steel Horse Rodeo “started as an attempt to bring in business and to have fun on the last week you could.” She also believed that it “brings good-natured riders” and it’s decently planned for a family-run event. She has a positive opinion, calling it “good fun,” She also mentioned connections to the poker run sponsored by the Livingston American Legion Post.
The other person running the stand is the “T-shirt presser,” Eve Morrison. She brought up that it started around 2015 and has happened every year since. She described the event as a “last hooray” and that her mom Milee crochet a unique pig for every year which is a door prize at the poker run. The reason it’s a pig is because the group of riders who normally show up to this event are Harley Davidson owners who are some times called hogs.
The poker run is an associated event where they have to ride to five different locations and get a poker card at each one, the one with the best hand wins, usually all using motorcycles the entire time.
